A Chance for Confidence: Memories of My Childhood

Read in DEUTSCH

There is a very special place where true treasures can be found. This place is our mind, the treasure chest of our memories. By memories I mean the beautiful memories that shine from a distance and become brighter and brighter. Maybe you have specific memories from your childhood that still make you smile today. Maybe you're creating memories with your own children or grandchildren.

At some point this treasure chest will open again, take you back in time and tell you a little story..

A Chance for Confidence:

Memories of My Grandma

I still remember my grandma pretty clearly. She was a very special person. Not only in my glorified memory, but also viewed in an objective way. She lived in the house of my uncle, my father's brother, and had her own kingdom there. She often sat in an armchair by the window when I came to visit her. The cat Loki liked to lie on her lap and let her scratch him behind her fur ears. It often smelled of herbal tea, which she liked to drink so much. It stood in a flowered pot next to her on a small table, which Aunt Milena, the wife of Papa's brother, had prepared for her. I usually greeted her happily, "Hello Grandma, it's me Litha!" Then grandma always smiled and held her hands outstretched in my direction. I then put my face in her hands and let her warm hands stroke my skin. "Hello Litha, yes it's you! I feel that you are beaming all over your face! It's nice that you're coming to visit me!" Grandma was blind, but that didn't bother us at all. We could also talk about an infinite number of topics, drink herbal tea together and sometimes even sit in the garden, where tomcat Loki lay purring in the sun. Then Loki sometimes poked Grandma with his nose and he got his cuddles.

When I was a certain age and was supposed to go to kindergarten, my mother hesitated to send me there. Instead, when she had to go to work, she gave me to my aunt Milena. There I spent a nice time with my grandma. I often watched her sitting in a garden chair and knitting something. Yes, my grandmother could knit. She had learned this before she became blind and now continued it as a pastime. "Can you smell the flowers, Litha?" she often asked. I took a strong drag through my nose. I could smell the scent of hay and meadow with clover flowers and chamomile flowers. "Yes, grandma, I actually smell the flowers!" I played with Loki and was carefree and content.

This time changed when I started kindergarten. The other children clearly showed me that I was not accepted as I am. "You're not like us!" I had to hear. This often made me very sad and even more so that I could understand them. Because my appearance was actually different from that of the others. Then after kindergarten I went back to the house where my grandmother lived. She greeted me with a smile as always: "Hello Litha! Come to me!" She pulled me towards her so that her fingers could stroke my face. "You're sad today, what's going on?" On days like these, I especially enjoyed drinking herbal tea with my grandma, talking about the big and small things in life, and playing with Loki in the garden.

When I'm not feeling well today, I remember my grandma. I try to slow down the thoughts in my head, just to feel what is happening around me. I then ask myself whether the things that bother me so much are really so terrible. If my grandma were still here, I would discuss my worries with her and she would cheer me up and smile at me. She is still a great role model for me now, because her confidence was overwhelming. Her eyes could not see, but her view of the world was all the clearer. On a sunny day, when the air smells of hay and meadow flowers, I feel my grandma's love and am sure that everything will turn out well. When the sun disappears behind thick clouds and the world appears in a dim light, a cup of herbal tea helps me to see things a little more clearly. Then I close my eyes, take a deep breath and give a chance to the positive turn.

                          see you then,
